In the Garden

Coreopsis, lavender and jasmine

words from a love poem whispered in a foreign language
promising passion, fevered kisses, a light caress.

Azaleas, rhododendron and day lilies,
the tangos and salsas,
high energy rhythms of the garden.

Dead nettle, mugwort and feverfew,
images of poison and death-tipped thorns
sleight-of-hand and only a trick

Dandelions, lily-of-the-valley, bleeding hearts
the adventurers, invitations to explore
the next horizon, to keep moving

and hope you can find your way home.
